Dorothy Jean Mackey Blade

Dorothy Jean Mackey Blade 10-5-1941 to 10-3-2017
October 5, 1941 in Archie, Louisiana, Prince and Ellen Mackey, with the help of a midwife, welcomed their 8th child into the world; Dorothy Jean. Her first and middle name both mean “Gift of God”, and Dorothy was a double blessing! As a young girl she was baptized and active in the church. She attended schools in Goodpine, Louisiana. Dot eventually moved to the Houston area in her 20’s. She attended and graduated from a local nursing school. Her nursing career was spent at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Ben Taub Hospital and a few others in the Texas Medical Center. Dorothy Jean met the love of her life, Lee Edward Blade. The Blade Union produced 4 children; Jeffery Blade, Anita Blade, Patrick Blade, Kimberly Blade. After her husband’s demise, her relationship with H.H. Hollman blessed her with another son, Hawathia H. Blade. Dorothy was affectionately known to those who loved her most as “Mama Blade, Granny, Jean, Dorothy Jean, and Dot.” Her personality was unmatched. Her straightforward, unashamed way of speaking was one to be envied. “Forever young” is a good phrase to describe Dorothy as she was very “secretive” about her age. She would hide her driver’s license in her trunk, to keep her date of birth concealed. She loved her sunglasses, lipstick and nail polish. She preferred “more of today’s fashion” versus things of her generation. Food, money and talking on the phone were things that she loved most. Dorothy was pretty much an “old school teenager”. Her spunk and attitude will never be forgotten. There’s no doubt that Dorothy endured some hardships in life, but her tenacity and drive to overcome is inspirational to us all. She departed this life on October 03, 2017. Her unique personality and fun spirit will truly be missed. Dot will meet in heaven her daughter; Anita Blade, her parents; Prince and Ellen Mackey, her brothers; Charlie Mackey, James Mackey, and Larry Mackey.
